The video had been up on YouTube for three hours by the time I saw it.

It already had 345 views and six comments. I hit refresh on my browser and the number went up to 468. Then 742 and twelve comments. This thing had legs. Major legs.

I didn’t know who posted it. Their screen name, EastsidePrepster, had a picture of ECD’s coyote mascot for the avatar. Whoever it was, they hadn’t posted any other videos before this one. It looked hastily recorded on an iPhone, and it wobbled.

The angle made me eliminate the most obvious suspects. And yes, it would have been so much easier if I could have blamed this on Olivia and Kassey. But I couldn’t. Whoever shot this video had a totally different angle than those two girls had been at when I’d seen them in Nordstrom.

There I sat in the video, in all my glory, trying on shoes in blissful ignorance. That wouldn’t be so awful except for one thing: the person behind the lens had captured the one time during the entire shopping trip when I’d pulled off my sunglasses to take a closer look at the woven design on a pair of brown Sperrys. A pair of shoes that I’d later vetoed from the final group.

What an idiot move on my part.

If I could take it back, I would. That one brief moment in time had given away so much about my condition, so many details I’d been trying to keep away from the prying eyes of my classmates and the flow of gossip at school. Now, everyone who watched that video would have an opinion, and I knew they wouldn’t be good ones.

In the title for the video, EastsidePrepster wrote: “I knew it. Total proof that Holly Kent has a major disease—look for it at one forty-five in.”

“Yikes, what the hell is wrong with her face?” wrote CGR324.

As I stared at the computer, comments about my appearance and the state of my health popped up on the screen. Every time I hit refresh, I saw more and more. They were like ants on a piece of cheese in the grass. They swarmed over this video and digested it with gusto, as if they had waited for this their whole lives.

“Someone should tell her to stay inside so she doesn’t spread it! My eyes!” typed Anygirl18.

“Just more proof that beauty doesn’t last,” said KennyGMan. “And seriously, she was never that hot, anyway.”

“2 gross 2 live,” CincySlayer posted.

“I had class with her last semester and she never talked to me. Just sat in front of me smelling like a prostitute. Totally thought she was better than everyone else. You guys should have heard the kind of comments she made about other people in class. A total BITCH,” replied SillyC125.

“Someone should put the poor girl out of her misery. If I looked like that—well, thank god I don’t.”

“Someone else is totally going to be Prom Queen this year,” commented KissMeGurl.

“She was like the epitome of white privilege, so it’s good to see that she’s getting what she deserves.
